What is a sonnet?
A sonnet is a classic poetic form with many variations, though they typically consist of exactly 14 lines and a tight rhyme scheme. Sonnets use their form and structure to portray a build-up of emotion that leads into a dramatic turn. 

Although sonnets have historically been used to express complicated and romantic desires, sonnets can explore any topic from mortality and war to friendships and loss.

The two most famous types of sonnets are Shakespearean sonnets and Petrarchan sonnets. Shakespearean sonnets consist of 3 quatrains (ABAB CDCD EFEF) and a final rhyming couplet (GG), while Petrarchan sonnets consist of an octave (ABBA ABBA) and a sestet (CDECDE).
